Photo gallery of Waikato
Waikato stretches from the north-eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu in the south to the Coromandel Peninsula in north. The name for the region is taken from the Waikato River; waikato is a Maori word traditionally translated as flowing water. Norhtern part of Waikato has been dedicated to gold mining, of which evidence can be found in historical Thames, or in Waihi. A must is exploring Coromandel peninsula that is steep and hilly, and is largely covered in subtropical rain forest. There is also one of the most beatiful beaches in New Zealand - Catherdral Cove, in Whanganu-A-Whei Marine Reserve. Mineral Spas in Te Aroha is just a hidden treasure.
