Photo gallery of Southland
Southland is New Zealand's southernmost region and it consists of the southwestern portion of the South Island and Stewart Island/Rakiura.On the south-western corner, there is situated Fiordland - a geographic region, comprising nearly the third of Southland. Most of Fiordland is dominated by the steep sides of the snow-capped Southern Alps, deep lakes and its ocean-flooded, steep western valleys. Fiordland features a number of fiords (often misnamed sounds), of which Milford Sound is the most famous, especially thanks to grand Mitre Peak and scenic sailings through fiords. Situated within Fiordland is Sutherland Falls, which ranks among the tallest waterfalls in the world, and New Zealand's three deepest lakes, Lake Hauroko, Lake Manapouri, and Lake Te Anau.
This part of New Zealand has a very wet climate, receiving 6,300mm of rainfall per year.
Fiordland National Park is among other the place where three Great walks are situated. Spectacular and very wet Milford Track, panoramic Routeburn Track extending to Mount Aspiring National Park, and challenging Kepler Track. Making at least some of them is a must. New Zealand can hardly offer anything better than this as for the nature's beauty and experience's intensity.
